Alcoholics Anonymous

Cancer Support Group
Tuesday, Oct. 19
(once per quarter) – 6 to 7:30 PM

Develop a strategy for coping with cancer. The group is open to anyone with cancer, their family members and/or others significant to them. Contact Beverly Greenwood, M.S.W., at 244-5432 or Chaplain Judy Nelson at 244-5430 for more information. Free. No reservations required.

Renew Support Meetings
Thursday, Oct. 28 and Tuesday, Nov. 30
(none in December) – 7 to 8:30 PM

Renew meetings are designed to provide emotional support to patients who have undergone obesity surgery. New patients interested in speaking with current Renew patients are invited to attend the group meeting from 7 to 7:30 PM, followed by a consultation with Ruary O'Connell, M.D., F.A.C.S. Basic Cardiac Life Support Classes (CPR)
Classes taught by American Heart Association certified instructors. Learn the simple techniques of CPR and the Heimlich maneuver that can save a life. Participants will receive an AHA CPR card upon completing the class. Nonrefundable fee, payable at the time of the class (includes manual). Re-certification classes offered only for Health Care Provider course. To register, call 244-5728.

BLS For Healthcare Providers CPR
Wednesdays, Oct. 27, Nov. 10, 24, Dec. 15, 29 – 8 AM
This course is for the healthcare professional. One and two-rescuer adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), pediatric and infant resuscitation, foreign body airway obstruction management, mouth-to-mask technique, AED and airway management. The course includes a written test, lecture and a performance evaluation using the CPR mannequins.



Wellspring Diabetes Self-Management Education
An American Diabetes Association nationally recognized program. For reservations, call 244-5728.

Diabetes Self-Management Classes
Mondays, Nov. 1, 8, 15 – 1 to 4 PM
Mondays, Dec. 6, 13, 20 – 9 to 12 PM

An educational program designed to teach adults how to manage and maintain control of diabetes. The series of four classes is taught by a nurse (who is a certified diabetes educator), dietitian, pharmacist, physical therapist and social worker. Insurance or cash payment accepted.

Gestational Diabetes Education Program
A four-hour class to teach women how to manage and maintain control of diabetes during pregnancy. The class, taught by a nurse, who is a certified diabetes educator, and a dietitian, will focus on nutrition, monitoring, medication, exercise, and preventing complications. Insurance or cash payment accepted.

Early Pregnancy Class
Wednesdays, Oct. 20, Dec. 8 – 7 to 9 PM
This class is designed for expectant parents during the first or early second trimester of pregnancy. It provides information on fetal development, psychological changes, and discomforts of pregnancy, nutrition and preparation for breastfeeding. Free.

Expectant Parents Class
Wednesdays, Nov. 3, 10, 17, 24 – 7 to 9 PM
A four-week series to assist parents-to-be in obtaining information about childbirth, infant care and parenting, including a tour of the labor and delivery area. Free.

Sibling Class: How To Be A Good Big Brother Or Sister
Wednesday, Dec. 1 -- 4 to 6 PM
This class is a wonderful way to help an older child to better understand babies and to prepare for the changes that will occur in the household when an infant arrives. Free.

Lamaze Classes
A series of four classes to prepare the expectant mother and her support person for delivery. Paced breathing, relaxation and pushing techniques are taught to both the expectant mother and her coach. By fee. For reservations and schedule, call Jane Savage, R.N., at 456-9377.

Breastfeeding Support Group
Wednesdays, Oct. 20, Dec. 15 – 11:30 AM to 1 PM
Join new and experienced breastfeeding moms as we share tips and techniques. Pregnant moms are welcome and encouraged to attend. Free.



55 Alive/Mature Drivers Improvement Program
Thursday, Nov. 4 and Friday, Nov. 5 – 9 AM to 1 PM
This eight-hour program is a refresher course for drivers 55 years of age and over, presented by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). Participants learn to improve their skills and, upon completion of the course, are eligible for a discount up to 10 percent on automobile insurance premiums. Fee: $10 payable in advance. This program is intended to promote health and wellness for individuals 50 years of age and over. Nurses from Methodist Hospital are available during these hours to conduct assessments and provide appropriate health teaching. Free. No reservations required.



SeniorCise
Wednesdays and Fridays – 10 to 11 AM
Classes meet in the SportsCare Center at the Plaza. (Call for class schedule.) SeniorCise exercise class is designed to provide health and fitness awareness to older adults. The classes focus on muscular strength and conditioning, improvement on range of motion and endurance. Participants exercise from a choice of a seated position, or from a standing position near a chair for support. Call Tiffany Carter-Morris with SportsCare at 648-5555, ext. 105, for details.

Plaza Pacers
Fridays, Nov. 12, Dec. 10 – 9:30 to 11 AM
Staff from Methodist Hospital will be available at the SportsCare Center at the Plaza during these hours to provide information on important health topics. Join vascular surgeon Vikrom Sottiurai, M.D., Ph.D., as he discusses diagnosis and treatment for vein disorders.

Healthy Holiday Meals
Monday, Nov. 15 -- 11:30 AM to 1 PM
Auditorium. Fee: $5 (includes prepared holiday meal, payable at the door).

Linda Dinkins, R.D., will discuss healthy, flavorful food choices and preparation of alternative holiday meals. Prepared samples of healthy holiday dishes will be served.

Stress Management For The Holidays
Wednesday, Dec. 1-- 7 to 8:30 PM
Conference Theater. Free.

Dealing with the stressful experiences of everyday life can be difficult enough, but for many, the holiday season can be even more stressful and overwhelming. Rev. Paul Durbin, Ph.D., will address some of the causes of holiday stress and how to better cope through self-hypnosis and relaxation techniques to make the holiday season more enjoyable.
