Important Information Regarding Mastectomy Coverage

Photo of mature couple sitting on beach; Models used for illustrative purposes onlyThe federal government passed legislation mandating specific coverage for health plan members who choose to have breast reconstruction surgery after a mastectomy. This legislation is called the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998. For many years, Dean Health Plan has provided coverage for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy and related services. As required by law, Dean Health Plan provides coverage for:

  • Reconstruction of the breast on which a mastectomy has been performed
  • Surgery and reconstruction for the other breast to produce a symmetrical appearance
  • Prostheses
  • Care for physical complications during all stages of mastectomy, including lymphedema

These benefits are subject to deductibles, copayments and coinsurance as stated in your plan documents.
