Mammogram Guideline Change

Photo of a woman sitting on a couch drinking from a mugMore than 94 percent of breast cancer cases are in women older than age 40. As part of Dean Health Plan’s (DHP’s) ongoing efforts to improve the health of those we serve, the guidelines regarding the age that women should begin receiving regular mammograms have been updated to include more women. It is now recommended that all women starting at age 40 (previously age 50) receive a mammogram every one to two years. This is in addition to the monthly breast self-exams that are suggested.

At least every two years, the Dean Health System Clinical Practice Committee performs an analysis of the current care guidelines. Following the recommendations of the American Cancer Society and other health organizations, DHP is recommending that most women follow these new guidelines. It is important that women discuss these recommendations with their primary care practitioner (PCP) to determine the screening frequency that is most appropriate for them.

If you are older than 40 and have not received a mammogram within the past one to two years, we encourage you to call your PCP to schedule one.
