A flu shot is needed every year because the active strains of flu and the flu vaccine change every year.
- The flu is a respiratory illness and cannot be treated by antibiotics, but it can be protected against by a flu shot.
- Certain groups of people are at high risk for developing further complications from the flu, including:
- Those with diabetes, heart disease, asthma or other chronic medical conditions
- Those with a weakened immune system
- Children ages 6 months to 5 years
- Women pregnant during flu season
- Adults ages 65 and older
