Flu Shot Facts

Here are some important things to remember about the flu and flu shots:
  • Photo of needle and vaccinationA flu shot is needed every year because the active strains of flu and the flu vaccine change every year.
  • The flu is a respiratory illness and cannot be treated by antibiotics, but it can be protected against by a flu shot.
  • Certain groups of people are at high risk for developing further complications from the flu, including:
    • Those with diabetes, heart disease, asthma or other chronic medical conditions
    • Those with a weakened immune system
    • Children ages 6 months to 5 years
    • Women pregnant during flu season
    • Adults ages 65 and older
