Medicare is a federally sponsored program under
the Social Security Act that provides health insurance
benefits. Most people will become eligible
to enroll with Medicare when they reach age 65.
Medicare consists of Part A (hospital insurance)
and Part B (medical insurance). Medicare Part A is
usually free, while people who enroll in Part B pay
a monthly premium. If you are already receiving
retirement benefits from Social Security or the
Railroad Retirement Board, you will be automatically
enrolled in Medicare parts A and B starting
on the first day of the month you turn age 65.
It is your responsibility to notify your insurance
company when you enroll with Medicare.
If you are currently working and have insurance
through your employer, you may not need to
enroll in Part B. Factors such as age, number of
employees and current employment status will
affect which insurance pays first.
