Notables - Winter 2005 Cover Dean Health Plan Updates
Letter from the President
Earlier this year, Dean Health Plan called upon some of you through our annual member survey to give us feedback about the care and service you receive. I’d like to personally thank you for your responses and provide you with an update about what we learned and what we’re doing about it.

Managing Your Medicines
Many medications can benefit our health, but it is important to keep in mind that there are risks associated with any medication.

Take a Trip to Dean Travel Medicine
If you’re traveling abroad, you’ve probably planned many details, from where you’ll stay and what you’ll see to who will water your plants while you’re gone.

Get Heart Smart— Know Your Numbers
It’s hard to miss the message that too much fat and cholesterol are bad for your heart. Food packages read contains no cholesterol, and newspapers routinely carry the latest research findings linking a high-cholesterol diet with heart disease. Yet heart disease is still the number one cause of death for both men and women.

The Powers and Perils of Antibiotics
When you feel lousy from the symptoms of a cold or the flu, it’s natural to want relief — and fast. Avoid the temptation to ask your doctor for an antibiotic. It will do nothing to help fight off a cold or the flu. What’s more, taking antibiotics when they are not needed can strengthen illness-causing bacteria, making them resistant to antibiotics when you do need them.

Ready, Set, Run!
It may not be as trendy as Pilates or power yoga, but running still delivers a great fat-burning, stress-reducing aerobic workout. Many health benefits have long been linked to running. Experts say it helps increase HDL, or “good,” cholesterol; helps with weight loss; builds strong bones; improves balance and coordination; and lowers the risk for heart disease and diabetes.

Additional Updates
Provider Updates
Here is the list of new physicians, health care professionals, health care centers and pharmacies that have joined the Dean Health Plan provider network. They will be added to the next printing of the directory.

Changes to Service Updates
These physicians, health care professionals, health care centers and pharmacies are no longer providing services in the locations listed below (they may have moved to another location) or are no longer plan providers of the Dean Health Plan network.

Updated Drug Prior-Authorization List
The medications on this page require prior authorization by Dean Health Plan. Brand names (in capital letters) are listed for informational purposes only.

Exclusions to Your Dean Health Plan Drug Benefit
Our drug benefit does not automatically cover every new drug that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves. We have a panel of physicians from many different specialties to evaluate new drugs. If an excluded drug has been prescribed for you, ask your physician or pharmacist if he or she can substitute it with one of the medications we cover. Please call Customer Service for an updated list or for more information about your prescription drug benefit.
